7th & 8th June 2014 - Match Race RS Vision Challenge by Chris Dando There were several looks of trepidation as the sailors gathered at Varuna on Saturday for two days of match racing at Varuna -- the wind speed was 24-25 knots with a big surf running on the beach! However conditions were forecast to improve and after a patient wait of a couple of hours, the teams were drawn and the boats launched even though the waves on the beach were still a challenge. Due to the conditions the teams were told not to use spinnakers and the racing was got underway after several attempts to anchor the committee boat rib and one team having to recover from a capsize before the start. Florent with Miki and Alex (two of our Junior sailors) made his intentions clear for the weekend with a conclusive win after winning the pre start against Arnaud and Geoffroy. The second race turned out to be the key decider for the overall results for day one. Again Florent triumphed this time over Jordan who was crewed by Tom in this race. Jordan then followed this up with a victory in front of Greg and Scott who were rapidly learning about how to sail a RS Vision. In the two following matches, Arnaud finished ahead of Greg, and Jordan ahead of Arnaud. This left the final race of the day for Florent to seal the overall win with a victory over Greg. Eventually all teams got ashore about 17:30 after some hard racing. Sundays conditions were ideal with a 12-14 knot wind and the teams reformed to allow new skippers to have their chance to helm. There was some fairly aggressive action between all the teams pre start with several penalties incurred. In the first match Scott and Greg were a little late at the 4 minute signal and Ken and Jordan managed to prevent them crossing the start line to the pre start side before the 2 minute signal. With this advantage, Ken lost no time in taking the first win of the day. Alex, with Florent and Miki, was having his first taste of match race helming and did a great job to win his first race against Scott and Greg. He followed this up with another win against Neil and Alex B. showing the more senior member around that our Junior sailing skills are up with the best. Ken then took the next race against Neil. This left the final two matches to decide between first and second, and between third and fourth. After one aborted start (much to Alexs relief as they had collected a penalty), the pre start action saw Ken collect a penalty with Alex leading off the line. With spinnakers allowed, boat handling was at a premium. On the run Alexs team found that fishing with a spinnaker was not fast, and Ken slipped through. Sailing steadily from then onwards, Ken managed to build up just enough of a lead to clear his penalty with a quick well judged turn, and came across the line to win the match and the days event. In the final race of the weekend, Neil took a win over Scott to secure third position.
