7th Group sharpshooter eyes national title (PHOTOS) BAKER — Army Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Sikes sat in a car waiting for the signal of a hand slapping the roof overhead. At the sound of it, he hopped out, quickly set up his rifle on the car’s hood and fired at a 12-inch target about a third of a mile away. “Hit,” his spotter called out, looking at the target through a scope. In less than seven minutes, the sniper instructor with the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) lumbered over rocks, up a ladder, onto a roof and through a tunnel, stopping intermittently to fire at targets far in the distance. It’s called tactical precision rifle shooting, and in the past two years, Sikes has become a national competitor.
