8-1-14 ***I first saw this actor in “The Shop Around the Corner” from 1940. He co-starred with Jimmy Stewart and Frank Morgan. Felix Bressart, born March 2, 1892, was a German-American actor of stage and screen. He was born in East Prussia, Germany, which is now part of Russia, and was already a very experienced stage actor when he had his film debut in 1928. He started off as a supporting actor, but had soon established himself in leading roles of minor movies. After the Nazis seized power in 1933, he had to leave Germany and continued his career in German-speaking movies in Austria, where Jewish artists were still relatively safe. After no fewer than 30 films in eight years, he immigrated to the United States. One of his former European colleagues was Joe Pasternak, who had become a Hollywood producer. In his first American film, he co-starred with Deanna Durbin. MGM signed him to a studio contract in 1939. Most of his MGM work consisted of featured roles in major films, for instance, Edison, the Man in 1940, starring Spencer Tracy as Thomas Edison. He combined his East European accent with a soft-spoken delivery to create kindly, friendly characters similar to the role he played in The Shop Around the Corner in 1940. After almost 40 Hollywood pictures, he suddenly died at the age of 57. He died on March 17, 1949, in Los Angeles, California
