8-17-14: Matt continues to do really well. Didnt write an additional update last night because I was spending the night at the hospital and it is so much harder to do on my Kindle. He actually slept quite a bit yesterday after his big, big morning but by evening he was pretty wakeful again. Saw him page through Hillarys phone again; also saw him put his arm around her and rub her back and her face and head. I stepped out for a moment and came back to have Hilary and the nurse tell me that he had taken her hand and kissed it several times. That just touches my heart - and I am so thankful to God for those precious gestures. It was apparent to both Hillary and me that several times he seemed to be trying to convey something to us, and was getting frustrated when we couldnt figure it out. We gave him the white board to write on, and while we still could not make out what he was trying to say, he was making actual letters, and throwing in some punctuation too! Last night he woke up several times when the nurses came in to take vitals, give meds, etc. Every time he was awake he was trying to pull a tube out. :) This morning after I left, Joel told me that he asked Matt for a smile - and he gave him one!!!!! They got him up in the chair and he repeated everything he has done the past 2 days, i.e. trying to stand up, washing face, brushing teeth, etc. In addition the speech therapist asked him if his name was Matt, and he nodded yes. Joel said Matt also figured out that if he held his left hand very straight he could slide it right out of his wrist restraint - not that we want him getting out of it, but just knowing he is reasoning at that level is so wonderful. Want to send a special thank you to my sweet cousin Patsy Stewart, who has just shown up the past 2 afternoons, so Joel could get a break and go home a few hours early. That was such a nice treat for him, and we appreciate you so much Patsy! We appreciate all of you also, and your continued prayers and support. Love, Cheryl & Joel Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things He does for me. Psalm 103:2
