8/28/2014 Olivias update: What a fun day its been! Ken Hatfield and I visited with Seth and Olivia Hatfield today. We observed both OT and PT sessions and were included in the family teaching. Tomorrow will be 2 months since the wreck and she has made wonderful progress in all areas. 34 days ago she had a trach, feeding tube and could do nothing. She was barely able to sit and she wasnt sleeping for days in a row. Now she is doing her showers, dressing, eating, transfers, wheelchair propulsion with supervision and hands-on assist for safety. She is sleeping and resting well. In OT she is working on eye stabilizing and in seeing and responding to light exercises. Both of these skills will be needed for driving when she is ready. She improved in her reaction time by 8 hits today. Olivia worked hard in both OT and PT but PT is more physically demanding and tiring for her. She went up/down a flight of steps both AM/PM sessions. Seth said she did better in the AM than yesterday and I could see an improvement in the PM session since this morning. She has more trouble descending steps and controlling the leg she is bringing down. She worked on her protective balance responses on several kinds of devices to challenge her balance, strengthening and controlling her movements in sitting and standing. And she walked a good distance + side stepped! and backward walking. Some of her balance reactions are a little slow/delayed which makes her at risk for falls but like everything else those reactions have improved too. All of the therapists are doing a good job challenging her to do a little more each day and she is fully engaged in working hard to get better. . .with a little good natured banter along the way. Yesterday the PT put a gait belt on Seth and Susan so they could feel the correct amount of assist to provide Olivia. Olivia told Seth she wish she had her phone so that she could video him and put it on fb. Wouldnt that have been funny. Olivia is working on her memory and path finding. Both of these things have improved but they need to continue to improve for her safety. =) I dont think you found that second gym, Olivia. She is a week or so away from discharge. Plans are being pondered for Olivias next level of rehab. We are praying for the best decision for those plans. Thank you for all of your prayers and support. We appreciate all your care and concern! Keep up the good work Olivia!
