8:32 a.m. At this minute, Im officially closer to my 50s than my 30s... closer to age 90 than my birth. At this minute on February 4, 1969, a teen daughter of a Baptist minister from Kansas, gave birth at the Edna Gladney Center for Adoptions old Duncan Memorial Hospital off Hemphill St., some 5 or 6 blocks from where I live today, and where a couple days later my mom and dad would hold me for the first time and we would become a family and start a childhood full of love and happiness. And at this minute, today, Im kissing goodbye a good smart husband of nearly 21 years who loves me, so that I can head to City Hall to do a job I love for people I love, as I start a long Council day leading into tonights 7 p.m. Council meeting. At this minute, it feels a lot like Im atop a summit of my life with, behind me, a familiar mountainside, sometimes rocky, often verdant and beautiful, and beyond it a nurturing valley below. And on the other side, another, uncharted mountainside to explore, but not alone, and beyond it, a valley I cant really see or judge its distance, but know is out there... And at this minute, I wonder if J.D. would find the humor in my asking him if there is a vintage car in our driveway with a big bow on it for me to drive to City Hall... Yeah, 8:32 is a pretty good minute. And at this minute, Im a pretty fortunate now-45 year-old who is thankful for all of those who have joined me along the way, given me solid footing and strong hands-up along the way to get to this beautiful vista. 8:32 is a pretty good minute. And mine is a pretty good life. Thank you for being part of it.
