8 July 1979: Alan John McMillan, 19-years-old, single and a soldier with 1st Queens Own Highlanders holding the rank of Private was from Ross-shire, Scotland. Pte McMillan was killed by an IRA remote-controlled booby trap bomb in Crossmaglen village square. Two days earlier, soldiers saw a wire protruding from a letterbox of a house in Market Square and reported it back to base. A 4-man patrol had been moving around the square the following morning when the bomb exploded behind the door of the building. Pte McMillan was severely injured and was flown by helicopter to the Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast. He died in hospital the following day with his parents at his bedside. Pte McMillan had arrived only 2 days earlier in Northern Ireland. LEST WE FORGET!
