8 THINGS IVE LEARNED THIS PAST YEAR. In preparation of celebrating a full year in business later this month (woohoo), I thought I’d write down a list of things I’ve learned over the past year. This list is really a gathering of personal reflections that has gone on for several years now. I think a yearly list will make for a fascinating read when I’m older, a collection of thoughts written by an ever-evolving me. That’s a project for another day but for now, here are the 8 lessons I learned this year. 1. YOUR LIFE IS YOURS ALONE. Pay no attention to the doubters, the naysayers, and the pessimists always lurking, waiting, haunting. Just do what makes you happy. Do what makes you explode inside. Do what fills you with hope. Do what drives you. Do what you do best, and do what you love, and then do that for the rest of your life. You don’t have to do it like everyone else, but you do have to live your best life and become your best you. 2. TIME IS IRREPLACABLE. Be careful how you spend yours. Do not waste energy on discussions that don’t matter, people who are unkind, and communication disguised as connection. Do not donate your life to energy vampires and false friends. 3. BE GRACEFUL IN DEFEAT. Failure happens to everyone. Things go wrong, setbacks are normal. Dont be afraid to try again. Failure is temporary and it always comes with great lessons. 4. BE TOUGH. Ive had nights where Ive cried myself to sleep, but I always wake back up the next day ready to conquer the world. Ive learned that life is tough, but Im freaking tougher. 5. YOU CANT PUT A PRICE ON MEMORIES. Ive learned it takes very little financially to make me happy and its the simple things that truly count. Its those things that will matter in 10, 20, 30 years....not the number in my bank account. 6. ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS HARD WORK. And scary as hell. Remember that experts are beginners who never gave up, bosses are interns who stuck with it, and professionals are amateurs who refused to be defeated by life or critics. Keep going, keep going, keep going…. 7. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREAT PEOPLE. As I’ve moved through the weeks and months of starting a new business I’ve been particularly blessed in the support that I’ve received from both people that I already knew and those I met or got to know better in this past year. Its made me realize how important it is for all of us to find a community where we feel accepted and supported and energized to do the things we want to do. Some people call this a “tribe” – a group of people you’ve gathered around you who are your kind of people. They may be your friends or family who know you in “real” life, or they may be wonderful connections you’ve met online. Either way, finding your tribe is an important step in doing what you love. 8. YOUVE GOT TO TAKE INITIATIVE. There is nothing more important than immediate action. Grab life by the balls. Punch your fears in the face. Kick tomorrow in the teeth. Get shit done, do good shit, and make shit happen. Go out and make a difference in the world. Begin immediately. ~Stephanie, Retro Dinner Diva
