Ross Secondary School s Jordan Hofstra drags down Jacob Hespeler Secondary Schools Brandon Metz during the CWOSSA football semifinal game on Wednesday. ByMark Bryson CAMBRIDGE — The Jacob Hespeler Hawks are one win away from playing for an OFSAA championship. The Hawks continued their run at a provincial title on Tuesday night with a 47-13 win over Guelphs John F. Ross Royals. Brandon Metz and Simon Beeksma scored two touchdowns apiece as the Hawks easily won the Central Western Ontario semifinal game on their home turf. We played great. The offence clicked and the defence held them scoreless for three quarters, said Hawks linebacker Wyatt Hogan-Crawford, who recovered a second-half fumble. The goal is OFSAA and this is the group to do it. The Hawks will host Brantfords Assumption College Lions in Saturdays 1 p.m. CWOSSA final. The Lions scored a 38-16 win over the host Saugeen District Royals in Tuesdays other semifinal. Saturdays winner moves on to an OFSAA bowl game on Wednesday at Etobicokes Centennial Stadium against Hamiltons Westdale Warriors. John F. Ross was no match for Jacob Hespeler on Tuesday as the Waterloo County champions built a 26-0 halftime lead and never looked back. The Hawks hit the scoreboard first with 2:10 to play in the first quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback James Roberts. A special teams gaffe led to the Hawks next score as the Royals botched a punt attempt that was recovered by Ryan Wall at the Ross 26-yard line. Roberts connected with Simon Beeksma one play later for a 24-yard TD and the Hawks were up 14-0. Metz scored the third touchdown of the opening half when the Grade 10 running back scampered for a 15-yard score. Hawks defensive back Christian Chopping-Clarke intercepted Ross quarterback Tommy Yanchus late in the second quarter to set up a 37-yard field goal by Keiran Burnham. Kevin Pham ran for a five-yard TD in the third quarter and Beeksma caught a three-yard pass to make it 40-0. Beeksmas TD came just a few plays after Ashton Pilkey intercepted Yanchus at the Ross 15-yard line. The Royals scored both of their touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Hawks head coach Greg White inserted some of the 18 junior-aged players that had been added to the roster for Wednesdays game. Jacob Hespelers final touchdown came when junior-aged signal caller Jackson White handed off to Metz for a 20-yard score. The juniors wont be replacing starters but if we need a shot in the arm or we need a breather, weve got some depth now, said White. Pham welcomes Metzs company in the backfield and marvels at the Grade 10 players talent. The addition of the Grade 10 players really helps and (Metz), hes a helluva player and I dont mind sharing the ball with him. Hes a great addition to the team, said Pham. Carlton Smith saw limited action for Jacob Hespeler on Wednesday. The versatile slotback/safety was banged up in last weeks WCSSAA final against Resurrection and only played defence against John F. Ross. Assumption will be going for its fourth consecutive CWOSSA championship on Saturday. The Lions recently captured their fourth consecutive Brant County title and had little difficulty with Saugeen District on Wednesday. mbryson@therecord Jacob Hespeler 47, John F.
