8 months is ridiculous...AKC really needs to change this... Petitioning American Kennel Club Change female canine breeding age regulations and enforce them. Jodi Vetter Petition by Jodi Vetter White, SD This is a petition to stop the American Kennel Club (AKC) from allowing the breeding of young, underdevloped and immature female dogs from breeding. New regulations need to put into place and actually be enforced. Currently the AKC regulations state they will register puppies from a 8 month old dam. Many respected kennel clubs worldwide require a minimum breeding age of 12 months. The AKC should promote more responsible breeding practices, not promote irresponsible practices. Their current regulations state 8 months for a female, but the AKC has been proven to allow breedings at 7 months of age for a female on the basis that they were close enough. Thus, not even enforcing their own extremely young regulations. Look anywhere for expert breeding advise, and never will you find a reputable source ever saying a female should be bred at this age. General guidelines I have found are: Small dog breeds: Between twelve and eighteen months old Medium size dogs: Between fifteen and eighteen months old Large dog breeds: Approximately eighteen to twenty-four months old Breeding too young can deplete a dogs own resources, can stunt development, and in extreme cases can result in injury and/or death. The only reason for anyone to breed this age would be money. In additon, the only reason any kennel club would register puppies from a dam this is age is for money, not for the welfare and betterment of the breed. AKC needs to start living up their name and claims of promoting responsible breeding. By allowing the breeding of 7-8 month old females they are giving many breeders the false belief that it is ok to do since they clearly allow the practice. This proposed rule would only affect irresponsible breeding practices and help eliminate some of the problem. A breeding age to register puppies from a dam at 12 months of age is a more than fair compromise, considering this age is even younger that what the majority recommend. It would even be wise to divide up the required breeding age by breed to fit the breed size recommendations. Thus, making the larger breeds be older than the small breeds. Many important health screenings cannot even be completed until a canine reaches 24 months of age. Furthermore, 12 months needs to be absolute minimum age, NO close enough. The canine is either 12 months at time of breeding or it is not, there is no real valid excuse or circumstance not to wait. If their is some medical issue not to wait, the dog should not be a breeding dog. This proposed rule has a goal of going into effect by the end of 2014, the eariler the better. change.org/petitions/american-kennel-club-change-female-canine-breeding-age-regulations-and-enforce-them?utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_facebook_mobile&recruiter=89804650
