848 PRIESTS DEFROCKED - SO WHAT? The Pope(s) defrocked 848 - TopicsExpress

848 PRIESTS DEFROCKED - SO WHAT? The Pope(s) defrocked 848 priests over the past 10 years, and doled out lesser punishments to another 2,572 accused of raping and molesting children. Lesser punishments? Who cares if they arent allowed to PREACH any more? Why arent they in JAIL? Seriously, this is something Ive struggled to understand from a legal perspective. Can someone help me out? Are families not pressing legal civil/criminal charges because its a church issue? Are churches not required to report the abuse to authorities in some states (and, regardless of the law, would they report anyway)? Is it a statute of limitations issue, with victims not speaking out until too much time has passed? Or, is the media just doing a really poor job of reporting? Why are these stories all about the priests being stripped of their holiness instead of being stripped of freedom? I couldnt care less about church discipline. I want to see criminal justice (convictions) to protect our children. Kick em out of the church and then what? Do they become plumbers and painters? (After all, what other reason would a defrocked priest have to buy a windowless white Ford Econoline?)
