9/1/17 Dull cold morning. On duty 8.30 am until 1 pm. Should have recommenced work at 5 pm on the joy-wheel but persuaded a comrade to exchange duties with me for 5 francs which gave me the evening free. After dinner our relief was employed in erecting an Armstrong hut behind the mill for the use of the electrical mechanics. About 7 oclock this evening I again observed the aerial fire this time flying in the direction of Amiens. I have ascertained that it is in truth an aeroplane, but until yesterday I had never observed the peculiar object which these machines present when illuminated in such a manner. A heavy bombardment is progressing upon our front without intermission, I have had another interview with the people with whom I propose to live, that is for sleeping purposes, as I was undecided whether it would be better to return to my old place. I intend however now to take up my new quarters and may go into them tomorrow evening. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Other war news from 9th January,1917: Western Front British take trenches east of Beaumont Hamel (Ancre).
