9/11 Hero and Permian Basin Resident to be honored Midland, TX – Bob Cornell, the longest serving volunteer for the Permian Basin Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, will be honored by the Home Instead Senior Care for his service with West Texas Senior Care LLC. The official honor will be bestowed to Cornell at a ceremony scheduled for 1:00 pm, Friday, June 28 at the Red Cross office located at 9601 Wright Drive in Midland. As part of the honor Bob is receiving $250.00 in the form of a contribution that will be made to the organization of his choice. Cornell has decided to designate his contribution to the Permian Basin Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. Cornell was present at 9/11 and was one of the first on the scene helping people from the lobby out of the World Trade Center moments after it was hit by the hijacked aircraft. In telling of Bob’s experience one local paper wrote: “(He) walked each person down a long hallway, and introduced himself on a first-name basis. Then he did what he’s always done in his 19 disaster volunteering experiences. He sat them down, looked them in the eye, and told them, ‘Right now, the most important person in the world is you, and the Red Cross is going to do everything it can to help you’.” The Permian Basin Area Chapter is honored to have Cornell as one of its volunteers. Stephanie Murphree, Chief Executive Officer for the Chapter said, “His efforts are certainly worthy of acknowledgement, recognition and praise. His spirit – however - is the same that runs through every volunteer who chooses the Red Cross as his or her outlet for service.”
