9:46 PM Monday 23 September 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Volleyball – High School – Girls – Elkhart Central @ South Bend St. Joseph Unlimited Permission to Reprint in whole on in part Match # 14 by Coach Michael G. Mathis “New Prairie way too much for South Bend St. Joe” South Bend, Indiana – # 4 rated one loss New Prairie (24-1) Cougars had way too much offense and defense for the home team South Bend St. Joe Indians as they took a 3 game sweep 25-16, 25-23, 25-10 in 67 minutes Monday night… Scouting the match from the sidelines was none other than Mishawaka Marian, the one team to beat the Cougars… The Knights will play at St. Joe on Thursday in what Senior Star Jordan Bueter called a “Holy War.” Understandably so as the heavily favored Knights fell to St. Joe in the Plymouth sectional finals last year after being worn out by New Prairie in the morning match… With Plymouth moving up in class, 3A powers Marian (#1) and New Prairie (#4) are headed in different directions, with the Knights going to Bremen and Cougars going to Knox… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Firing on all cylinders right from the start, New Prairie dominated play in the first stanza in a 25-16 score which didn’t appear that close… Down 18-9, the Indians returned to their modus operandi of setting the Middle for 4 straight. Finally, a MA HE by SJ, but the Cougars responded for 3 straight including 2 by sophomore MH Ashlynn Smith on a comeback K to 1 zone and a solo block… NP 20-13… SJ picks up 2 blocks by senior MB Nicole Francoeur, but 5 points out of 7 by NP are way too much… NP ends the game on a fancy tandem play with 2 hitters up and available: Tri-Captain Janelle Rehlander calls for the ball in the middle to draw blocking attention, while sophomore Ashlynn Smith runs a 31 and tips the ball down – all made possible by deceptive senior setter Allie Ritchie… NP 25-16 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SJ needs to regroup… Let’s see what happens in game 2… Down 5-1 on a series of self imposed errors, NP doesn’t panic… The Coach doesn’t call TO to see if his charges will respond… Sophomore Jessie Ferrell hits a wipe off the block while SJ suffers from confusion… Sophomore Mackenzie Chrapliwy picks up a kill as does senior Madeline Clines…. Chrapliwy also gets and ace… The Indians are feeling better about themselves… SJ 9-3… All # 7s on both sides of the net, with Malorie Kendzicky firing for the Indians and Jessie Ferrell going for the Cougars over the next 5 points, but all 5 go to NP… SJ 9-8… Kendzicky jumps out of the gym in elation as her solo block of a pipe set give the Indians brief respite… Clines come through as well with a K… SJ 11-8… 3 in a row for NP (SJ SE; Rehlander K; Smith K)… Tie score 11… NP SE; Great dig by SJ senior Libero Chelsea Suppinger which was eventually terminated… SJ 13-11… 4 in a row for NP (Rehlander K; SJ misplaced effort; SJ HE; Scramble play)… NP 15-13… NP HE; SJ net error; NP Rehlander overpass put down… NP 17-13… 2 Ks by SJ (Francoeur; Chrapliwy)… NP 17-15… 1 NP HE + 2 more for NP (SJ HE; SJ PE)… NP 19 -16… SJ picks up 1… NP picks up 2 Ks (Ferrell; Sensow) SJ Kendzicky picks up her 2nd pipe block… NP 21-18… NP for 2 (Sensow K; Freshman Jen Ritchie Ace)… NP 23-18… St. Joe in a real bad spot, but NP gives up 3 in a row on 2 errors and a SJ Madelyn Kostielney ace... NP 23-21… NP Smith drills a MA to 1 zone, SJ Kendzicky gets a right side K, before a NP Middle Block ends it at 25-23… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A disheartened home team sees runs against them of 4, 6, 4 in the 16 minute 3rd game ending 25-10… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Prairie Head Coach Troy Campbell was pleased with his team as he commented: “Thought St. Joe played hard…Know their players from the Dunes Volleyball Club…They played their hearts out…Put them in a tough situation with aggressive serving…I was real happy with the play of MacKinnon Tracy, our backup setter who gives us great energy”. St. Joe Head Coach Kathy Mossey commented: “We need to play loose…play with confidence…seniors have worked 4 years to be here…need to play calm…we have to chip away…” Tomorrow night’s match notwithstanding, it doesn’t get easier for St. Joe as cross town Catholic rival Marian comes over Thursday for a non prayer session… The Knights have to remember what happened last fall as St. Joe took them down at Plymouth… St. Joe is looking for a leader from their senior squad which certainly will defend home turf… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The play of the match… St. Joe’s Mackenzie Chrapliwy hit a rocket from the right side… The whole St. Joe team thought the ball was down, but Breanna Wisser playing perfect rotation defense defended the line and dug the ball perfectly to setter Allie Ritchie who spiked it at a celebrating Indian team… The ball bounced off at least one player’s head before hitting the St. Joe floor for a Cougar point… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stats New Prairie (24-1) SB St Joe Kills Jessie Ferrell 9 Nicole Francoeur 6 Janelle Rehlander 8 Malorie Kendzicky 5 Cassidy Sensow 7 Mackenzie Chrapliwy 5 Ashlynn Smith 7 Assists Allie Ritchie 24 Morgan Holland 16 Digs Catherine Ament 10 Chelsea Suppinger 33 Janelle Rehlander 8 Mackenzie Chrapliwy 8 Breanna Wisser 8 Blocks Ashlynn Smith 12 Nicole Francoeur 3 Morgan Holland 3
