9 August is a public holiday that commemorates 1956 protest against the legislation that required black South Africans to carry a pass (identification document). The protest was led by Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams De-Bruyn. an approximate number of 20 000 women turn up from all over the coutry with many carrying the children of their white bosses on their backs. After dropping off bundles of petitions carrying more tha 100 000 signatures at Prime Minister Strijdoms office they stood in silence for about 30minutes before burating into a song: wathintabafazi wathintimbokodo, uzofa... translated as: now you have touched the women, you have touched a rock, you will die... The women of 1956 displayed political strength, female solidarity and inner fortitude. The 1956 march is a reminder of the womens contribution to our liberation and a demonstration of the power of women to change the world into a better place for all.
