#9 Elmore James It Hurts Me Too (1965) According to Wikipedia, Elmore James first recorded It Hurts Me Too in 57, and this version was recorded in 62 or 63 and released in 65 (he died in May of 63). The first version I ever heard was from the Rolling Stones side project Jamming With Edward (Jagger, Watts & Wyman teaming up with Ry Cooder and Nicky Hopkins). The second was by Savoy Brown (sung by Lonesome Dave Peverett who then did it again with Foghat). I got my first Elmore album in my early 20s and was immediately taken by this song. His beautiful slide guitar and commanding voice was striking, and I put him right next to Muddy as my favorite blues singers. It was first recorded by Tampa Red in 1940, and Ive always thought the melody was very similar to Fred McDowells You Got to Move, which probably means its actually rooted in a old spiritual. And I love the slight distortion on the rhythm guitar (Eddie Taylor?). Beautiful. I really dont know why Im so drawn to this song. I guess its just a feeling I get when I hear it. Thats what the Blues do.
