9. Most people do not seem to know the difference between satire and outright racist/hate speech. Perhaps they just choose not to differentiate when it suits them. Shiplu Miah So what have we learnt from the #Paris shootings: 1. Freedom of speech exists and is allowed only when it suits those in power and their narratives 2. Racism, anti-Semitism and Homophobia is against Free Speech But Islamophobia isnt. 3. Racist and Anti-Semitic satire is abhorrent, wrong, and should not be done, but satire about Islam, Muslims, and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is not only perfectly fine but should also be celebrated and congratulated. 4. When it comes to Free Speech, everyone is equal and have the same protection- but some people are more equal than others; namely those who serve the interests of the ruling elite. 5. White non-Muslim lives are worth more than all other lives, especially for the media outlets and world leaders. 6. It matters not if Muslims are also killed by terrorists, what matters is whether white non-Muslims have been killed. 7. Islam is the religion of 1.6 billion people around the world. Muhammed (pbuh) is the greatest figure of reverence for Muslims, whose honour is seen as their own. When this central figure of love, respect, and obedience is attacked in ways far beyond mere criticisms, then the odds of someone from this huge group of followers to do something wrong and criminal becomes high. This isnt a justification of such behaviour; this is an understanding of the reality of the world we live in. 8. For the foreseeable future, Muslims will continue to be expected to condemn acts of violence that they had nothing to do with. This is primarily because most non-Muslims, especially the media and politicians, see all Muslims as guilty (of extremism) unless proven otherwise. If a Muslim doesnt condemn such acts, then it is assumed that he or she must condone it. 9. Most people do not seem to know the difference between satire and outright racist/hate speech. Perhaps they just choose not to differentiate when it suits them
