97 and 98 in the band at La Mesa Middle School were the Sanfilippo brothers, Antonino (l) and Cosimo (r). Their family had an Italian restaurant in Pt. Loma, and I would see them when I performed with Lou Fanucchi and Milano at Italian-American Society functions. The family didnt stay long, returning to Italy. A few years later, friend and colleague Oscar Arias and wife were traveling through Italy and stopped at a restaurant in a small town. The owners heard them speaking English, found out they were from San Diego, and told them about their short stay in La Mesa. When they found that Oscar was a musician and told him the boys had been in the band at LMMS and I had been their teacher, the incredible connect was made ! Fast forward to tonight. Im at the Bella Vista Social Club at UCSD checking the venue setup for their Oktoberfest. Im met at the door with Hi Mr. Dyke. Its Cosimo, back in town and working at the club !
