98.7 The Beat Hosts 6th Annual Backpack Giveaway CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Hundreds of people lined up in front of West Virginia Radio Corporation Thursday hoping to get a little help preparing for the new school year. The Annual Backpack Giveaway hosted by 98.7, The Beat drew a huge crowd to the WVRC parking lot. Program Director and DJ Woody Woods said the event is about 98.7 giving back. Its a good thing for the community. Its a good thing to bring people together, to show that The Beat is a community radio station. I always say Were not just a radio station, were a family. We have an extended family, our listeners are a part of our family, Woods said. Each backpack that is given away is loaded with school supplies. Parent Krissy Garten says that the event definitely helps people in need. Ive been out of work for about two months, and I heard about this. It just helps me, Im very grateful, Garten said. Woods said that people like Krissy are exactly who theyre trying to help. We know times are tough, school supplies are expensive and a lot of people are in unfortunate situations right now. We just try to help, Woods said. The Backpack Giveaway has been going on for six years, and its a growing event. This year, thanks to the donations and support of several sponsors, The Beat was able to help prepare hundreds of students. Weve passed out over 600 backpacks, Woods said. According to Woods, the DJs with the radio station like to use the event as an opportunity to get kids excited about education. When they see our DJs excited about education, the child get excited. Weve seen it work since we started, Woods said.
