A 16-year-old L-plater was fined this morning after he was spotted by Victor Harbor police using his mobile phone with both hands while riding his motorbike. He was spotted on Seaview Rd about 10.45am and spoken to by police. The rider was issued fined for being a learner driver using a mobile phone while driving ($300 fine, $60 victims of crime levy and three demerit points) and for riding a motorcycle without any hands on the handle bars (driving a vehicle without proper control $165 fine, $60 victims of crime levy). On Monday police revealed that nearly 2000 motorists have been issued with fines this month as part of Operation Distraction – an ongoing state-wide police operation focused on reducing distraction-related crashes. Of those 1189 were detected using their mobile phones while driving. Police are urging the public not to use their mobile phones while driving – distracted drivers are a danger on the roads, both to themselves and other motorists.
