A 17-YEAR-OLD teenager who was employed as a herd-boy inChipinge was last week sentenced to nine years imprisonment for raping a 11-year-old girl at Buffledrift Woodlands. Sherpard Murahwa of Muromo Village, Chief Marange ,was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Mutare regional magistrate, Mr Alex Shumba. Prosecuting, Mr Mike Tembo said on July 5, Murahwa was herding cattle at Buffledrift Woodlands when he accused the girl of scaring off his beast. “Murahwa struck the girl with a stone on her right eye. The girl sustained a serious injury. He grabbed the girl’s right hand and dragged her into the bush, approximately 40 metres away from the footpath. “He took a stick and ordered her to lie down facing upwards. He forcibly turned the girl to lie on her back. The girl screamed for help, but Murahwa grabbed her neck and threatened her with death. He raped her once,” said Mr Tembo. He said after being released, the child went home and told her mother about her ordeal. A report was made to the police, leading to Murahwa’s arrest. The girl was referred toChipinge District Hospital for medical examination where Dr Rudo Kuwengwa confirmed that penetration was effected.
