A 59-year-old mini-mart owner charged with possession of 10 grammes of cocaine two days before Christmas was yesterday granted $80,000 surety bail. David Sandiford appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar at the Port-of-Spain Eight Magistrates’ Court. Sandiford, who was represented by Attorney Ronald J. Daniels, was charged with possession of cocaine at the South East Port-of-Spain Secondary School on December 23 this year. Daniels applied for bail noting that his client has pending matters and convictions but these date back to 1991 and 1992. He noted that Sandiford lives with his wife of 19 years, who also appeared in Court yesterday, and together they operate a small family mini-mart. He reported that the couple are the “de facto parents” of a five-year-old girl who has been enquiring about his absence, and it has been impacting her. Daniels also noted that his client has been “unconditionally cooperative” with the police, poses no flight risk and will abide with any conditions set out. Ayers-Caesar granted bail with surety of $80,000 and Sandiford has to surrender his passport and report to Besson Street Police Station two days a week. He is scheduled to return to Court on January 6 next year.
