A BAND CALLED DEATH (2013). “Before there was Punk, there was a band called Death.” A Band Called Death is a feature-length music documentary that chronicles the story of a band….called Death, that was founded by three African-American brothers (David, Dannis, and Bobby Hackney) in Detroit in the early 1970s. Despite being formed in the heartland of Motown, they not only had the audacity to name their band “Death,” but also had the foresight and the conviction to play some of the most ferocious and honest rock’n’roll ever recorded. They were punk rock before punk rock existed. They were so far ahead of their time, in fact, that it took 35 years for the world to catch up to their music. This film chronicles the formation, creative years, and dissolution of the band, as well as the long path to their belated “discovery” and recognition as the visionaries they were. More than that, however, it truly captures the essence of the individuals in the band and the unbreakable bonds of their family. A Band Called Death is one of the greatest music documentaries that I have ever seen, by far. At some points, I nearly fell on the floor with laughter, and at others, I cried. And I’m not ashamed.
