A BIG new project. Merry Hell are pleased to announce that they will be taking part in The Armistice Pals, a project featuring a fantastic assortment of Folk Musicians, marking the 100th Anniversary year of the start of the First World War, supposedly the war to end all wars, through a Perfect Day style recording of Pete Seegers clssic anti-war song Where Have All The Flowers Gone? many of you will remember that The Tansads recorded the song for the live album Drag Down the Moon and that is pretty much where the idea came from. We played a gig at Clitheroe Grand the week that Pete Seeger died and as part of the encore we did a rather ramshackle version of Flowers and invited the two support bands, Panjenix and deadwood Dog to join us on stage to perform it. According to one audience members facebook post There wasnt a dry eye in the house. Pretty much straight after, we contacted a number of singers and asked if they would be interested in the recording project. We have had a fabulous response from some great singers/musicians. Merry Hell will be providing the musical backing for the song plus vocal lines from Virginia and Andrew, with the remainder of the song made up of lines sung by other singers. The song will be released on Remembrance Sunday (Novembr 9th), with the plan being for it to be a download single, a cd and possibly a vinyl 7. Proceeds from the sales will go to a charity chosen by members of the Armistice Pals project. (Armistice for the agreement that marked the end of the war, Pals for the groups of young men from the same town who signed up together, formed batallions together, fought together and all too often died together, leaving whole communities shorn of their young men and suffering and hardship for their loved ones and dependants). There is now an Armistice pals Facebook page, which we would encourage you to like and to receive updates (invite your friends as well). https://facebook/armisticepals. Where else will you get the following artists (and awaiting final confirmation from more) coming together on one song for peace: Please give a warm Armistice Pals welcome to: Peter Knight (singer/fiddle player, Gigspanner, Feast of Fiddles, Steeleye Span and holder of the world record for continuously playing the violin whilst travelling up and down the lift in the Empire State Building), Sally Barker (folk singer and by popular acclaim, the true winner of The Voice) Flossie Malavialle (singer/songwriter et chanteuse aussi), Judy Dyble (singer/songwriter, ex-Fairport, nearly King Crimson and Facebook dog blogger), Helen Watson (Singer/Songwriter, multi genre artist, producer and erstwhile member of Daphnes Flight, Carmel and Sons of Arqa, as well as taking a great photo). The Irregular Robb Johnson (singer/songwriter and social conscience), Linda Simpson (singer/songwriter, ex-Prog/Folk/Rock legends Magna Carta and supplier of some ideas that are so good that wed like to present them as our own), Lucy Ward (singer/song writer and possibly the current heart of British Folk Music as she gets played on virtually every folk show we listen to, regardless of the other tastes of the presenters!). Ray Cooper (singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, ex-Oysterband and now a pearl in his own right), Patsy Matheson (singer/songwriter, spent time Waking The Witch, now The Domino Girl), Chris While and Julie Matthews (singers, songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, award winners in their own right and members of more prestige bands and projects than you can shake a stick at), Dave Mather & Peter Robinson (singer/songwriters (one of them has written an opera you know), ex-Houghton Weavers, stand up comedy and currently presenters of Salford City radios first folk show), Gavin Davenport (now a much vaunted solo singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, award winning, ex-Albion band member), Singer, writer, harpist, composer, conductor and actress from Wales, a big Armistice pals Creoso to Sian James, Kelly Oliver (singer/songwriter, guitarist and harmonicist who has taken Boots Of Spanish Leather to places most of us can only dream of), Dave Swarbrick (simply a living legend, as it says on the flyers, needs no introduction), Richard Ryall (singer/songwriter, member of the band Litmuss and he comes from a land Down Under) and perhaps surprisingly, our friend Attila The Stockbroker (poet/musician and sheer force of nature, of whom, more in a later post). We hope that you will support the project and we will have ideas for how you can help in later posts. NOW - go and like the Armistice Pals page! And share this post if you want to! Thanks
