A BIT OF JESUS EACH DAY- DAY 94 TEXT: MATTHEW 13: 36-43 THE PARABLE OF THE WEEDS EXPLAINED. In today’s text Jesus explains his own parable. A friend jokingly told me that he told his congregation whiles reflecting on this passage that once Jesus had explained his own parable who was he to add any further words. So after reading the gospel text he sat down and asked the people to reflect on the text. I am tempted to do same, but the last line of the text is catching: “Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand.” The first point to consider is the willingness to hear. ‘Willing’ means the act of making a choice. For Jesus therefore, a follower of his should decide, make that choice to hear his Word being spoken. The second point is that the decision or choice leads to listening and understanding. “To listen” means to hear with intention or pay close attention. Thus to pay close attention to God’s Word does not come by chance but after a conscious willingness to hear his word. Indeed we get to understand God’s word when we pay close attention to the inspired text. It is important to pay attention to every single word in scripture. You stand to appreciate scripture better if you pay particular attention to the written word. Read slowly, meditatively, and pay attention to details. Sometimes we just riffle through the passages of scripture. The follower of Jesus should decide to hear God’s word in scripture, pay attention to it by careful and meditative reading, and pray for understanding.
