A Better Birth Alan Greene, M.D. A newborns umbilical cord is routinely clamped and cut less than a minute after birth, but waiting a mere 90 seconds provides the baby with extra iron, oxygen, and antibodies. Many doctors resist it, however, because they have been taught that they need to hold the (wet/screaming) infant down at the level of the doctors so gravity will help the blood flow to the baby. Now a study has found that the cord continues to actively pump the blood when the still-attached baby is placed on the mothers chest or stomach. Learn more at drgreene/ticc-tocc
