A CALL FOR HELP…..TO RECOVER OUR NAUTICAL HISTORY FOR BROOKLIN, SEDGWICK AND SARGENTVILLLE, MAINE. Between 1800 and 1900 over 140 working sailing ships were built in Brooklin, Sedgwick, and Sargentville. They sailed all over the Atlantic and many in the Pacific, as was true with others built in neighboring villages on the Maine coast. Most of their history has vanished over time. This notice is a plea to those who have records, logs, stories, dusty trunks of nautical information, ship portrait paintings, half models, and hand-me-down stories of the ships built here and those who sailed them that can be gathered by the Brooklin Keeping Society and be put into an attractive readable book to honor this lost heritage before it completely fades away. We need your help. Please call or write the Brooklin Keeping Society, PO Box 4, Brooklin, ME 04616; tel. 207-359-8880; or e-mail us at brooklinks@gmail. Thank you! ~Anne Tracy Bray PHOTO of the Schooner Mercantile by Doug Mills via Maine Windjammer Cruises. She was built in 1916 near the towns mentioned by Anne, carried cargo until entering the passenger trade in 1943, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992 (No. 90001470).
