A COMMENT I MADE ON A POSTING REGARDING HORSE SLAUGHTER AFTER SOMEONE MADE THE OLD TIRED OVER-USED REMARK ABOUT BETTER TO SLAUGHTER HORSES THAN LET THEM STARVE........EQUINE NEGLECT IS NOT CAUSED BY THE LACK OF HORSE SLAUGHTER AS 100,000+ AMERICAN HORSES ARE SLAUGHTERED EACH YEAR BUT YET HORSES STILL STARVE....EQUINE NEGLECT IS A CRIME.....HORSE SLAUGHTER IS A SALVAGE MARKET. https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=398851476876721&set=a.395813533847182.92176.100002556166997&type=3&theater One of my public service announcements. Equine neglect is a crime.....horse slaughter is a salvage market. One has nothing to do with the other. That is a point that must be made clear for the public to understand we dont get a choice of slaughter or starvation. Those are non related issues from the root of the problem. We will have starving horses in our communities until animal cruelty laws are enforced and people find the punishment harsh. We will witness American horses shipped to slaughter until we get the law changed to prohibit the export of American horses wild & domestic period. When American horses are protected from slaughter & equine neglect is punished, that will put the end to the irresponsible breeding horses. When no one buys houses....they quit building them. Same for horses when the SALVAGE MARKET no longer exists which allows to breed thousands for a handful of champions and discard the rest and still be able to make a few bucks by being guaranteed the meat price. How many people will spay/neuter dogs/cats if they find they could make money by selling feline/canine meat for export abroad for human consumption? And yes, there is a market for it & it could make money. So where do we draw the line? What other excess things do we have that could be exported? Excess meth in Oklahoma too. Export it for profit, after all there is a market, it would pay well & not legal to sell to our own citizens (like horse meat) but profitable to export abroad. Like horse meat, toxic, and unsafe for human consumption. Where do we draw the line. As long as there is a buyer - should we be the sellers? Creating a salvage market for excess dogs/cats would only lead to more irresponsible breeding as it has for horses. Many worry about the return of US based horse slaughter plants like existed prior to 2007 but I for one do not see US based plants returning to American soil......they will not find a friendly environment to base their plants & the law suits will tie them up for decades to come. Their best ally was the lack of public knowledge of their existence and practices years ago but they cant hide away and quietly operate now without being in the public eye, which none of them want. One profound thought to ponder is that NO Kill Buyer would buy a horse to ship to slaughter IF no-one would sell at or below meat price. They would be effectively put out of business by not being able to make a profit. Some KBs have gotten smart and figured out that rescuers pay better than the meat buyers which is a double edged sword. Good for the horses that get pulled from kill pens but bad for the money in their pockets to obtain more horses. There are no easy answers but many well informed people with good intentions are pushing for positive change which will benefit American horses by no longer rewarding a predatory industry by allowing a salvage market to exist for our equine friends. We may all just be little ripples in the pond but collectively we are a tsunami
