A COMMENTARY ON JUAN PONCE ENRILE What is happening to Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile is a sad commentary on every man of power. It is no different from a Greek tragedy. As the chief implementor of the martial law regime of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Enrile enjoyed enormous powers. Enrile words were law. At the height of martial rule, whatever Enrile said spelled life and death on many political prisoners, who were arrested and detained without charges and released without any explanation. Now the situation has been reversed. Enrile, once a very powerful man, is crawling on the ground. No one could have imagined that at 90, Enrile would be facing the nonbailable offense of plunder. No one could have thought that that 90, he would be going to jail under the most humiliating circumstances. It is disturbing that, at 90, Enrile would be meeting a lynching crowd, who wants his head – or blood – to atone for his perceived sins in the part. The mob wants to exact a ton of flesh from his body, which is rendered frail and weak by his advanced age. As a rule, we don’t kick a man, when is down on the gutter. Neither do we spit on his face. It is enough to make our point clear and express our extreme disapproval and disgust over his wrongdoings. But the most important point is to learn a lesson. What has happened to Enrile provides the country a lesson on the downfall of a man. It pays to be on the right side of history. No matter what happens in the future, the past won’t begrudge a person for staying on the right side.
