A Chewy update. Chewy had his first vist to Meanwood Park today. I was a little concerned as to how hed climb into my van (using my dog steps) but turned out I neednt have worried. He was so giddy when he realised he was going on a journey with Bracken and Cookie in a motor! Once unloaded at the park, his chubby little face lit up at the sight of ALL that grass, ALL those strange dogs and people, and (OMG) water!!!! He snuffled around like an asthmatic hedgehog, taking in the exciting scents of foxes, dog wee, ducks, and picnic crumbs. He barely belly-flopped down, as there was just too much to take in, and hes now becoming a little more aware of his physical limits, and ability to stand or move for prolonged periods. Although after 3 weeks of walking, he can now TROT(!!!), play a bit of football, and stay upright for about 40 minutes continuously(!!!) After following him on his chosen route for half an hour, I led him down to the beck. I was thinking the hydrotherapy was just what his weak little legs needed, and knowing Labs and water.... unfortunately, im not sure that Chewy is aware that hes actually a dog. Water just dont do it for this lad. Fantastic for drinking, cant really beat it, but dip your feet in it???? Get your toes wet and cold???? Was I mad? So after patrolling the bank for a short time, we decided to call it a day. 45 minutes was about Cookies limit, and Chewy was panting, fit to drop. So back to the van, and then back home. Now at this point in Chewys routine, I sometimes tie him in my garden while I push Cookie back through my door, before taking him home. However, on this occasion, The lovely lump decided he wanted to come in too. That wasnt a problem for me, so for the first time ever, he followed Cookie and Bracken indoors. I quickly ran ahead and closed all the food cupboards, lifted the half full dog bowls off the floor, then left him to it. Every corner was thoroughly checked out, several bits of flooring were licked enthusiastically, and eventually I gave him a knuckle bone that had been chewed clean by many dogs, and he settled down in pure doggy heaven. Hes now crashed out at my feet as I type- and surprisingly NOT snoring. Hell be going home shortly Dont forget, this lovely boy is still looking for the ideal home... xxx
