A Classic Case of Who Done It? For the past four years, students in Pamela Bowers class at Hillcrest Middle have been doing their best Sherlock Holmes impressions as they seek to solve a mystery. Ms. Bowers and her colleagues carefully stage an elaborate crime scene complete with crime scene tape, evidence markers, and hidden clues. Her goal is to make writing argumentative essays more fun for her students. Students spend time analyzing the scene, meticulously scribbling down their observations and theories. They are then tasked with coming up with what they believe took place, and using the Toulmin Writing Model record their theory. It is lots of fun to see if anyone can guess the correct fictional scenario. Of course, there is a reward if they deduce exactly what happened. They are graded on how well they support their theory with observational evidence. Ms. Bowers was asked to present information on this innovative teaching method at the 2014 SC Council of Teachers of English annual conference in January.
