A Closer Look at Blood Fats … Cholesterol is a fat-related compound that is both manufactured in your body and obtained through food. There are two types of cholesterol – LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) commonly called the bad kind of cholesterol. It clogs arteries, causes high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. The lower the LDL, the better. HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is a good form of cholesterol. A high reading is a sign that cholesterol is being delivered to the liver, where it is processed and excreted, as it should be. The higher the HDL, the better. Lowering High Blood Cholesterol means cutting back on total fat to about 25% of your daily calories. Choose mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Special attention should be paid to eliminating saturated and trans fat. Eating lots of fibre, especially soluble fibre, found in foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, dried beans, lentils and peas would also be very beneficial. Avoid cholesterol-laden foods such as organ meats, e.g. liver, and restrict whole eggs to no more than two per week. Remember that cholesterol-free egg whites are a good substitute. ow.ly/x296m
