A Day in the Life of a School Therapy Dog By Kennedy, TCS Therapy Dog Dear Facebook Friends, Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a school therapy dog? Well, I have been asked to let you take a little peek into my world, so… Woof, woof! Yippee! Yes! She is parking in the school parking lot! I can’t wait to see my people friends! Hurry, open the door, hook my leash, and get me out of the van! Believe it or not, I feel this way every day! I miss school and my friends when Mrs. Reinhart delivers the disappointing news of a school delay or cancellation. But, I do love a little extra chair time! So once I get to school, I meet and greet every student I possibly can! My tail wags like no other, while my nose is frantically sniffing and nudging my friends. I even throw in a little kiss to those who smell extra sweet or perhaps a little like leftover breakfast! Then it is off to our office. I spend some of my day lounging beside the door. This is the absolute best place to receive pats, tummy rubs and lots of love. I seem to be very hard to resist! Some days I am very lucky to have my school friends groom me. Chicken flavored toothpaste is the best and nothing beats a good brushing! I am also busy helping to make my friends feel better. Mrs. Reinhart brings my friends in when they are sad, scared, angry, or experiencing other feelings they want help with. My job is to help our friends feel safe, happy and confident. I have many tools in my toolbox. I usually start by laying my head in our friend’s lap or nudging their arm with my nose. I have to let them know that I am there to help. Sometimes I may lick their hands or arms, if they like it. I have been known to get really excited and talk to our friends. I have a couple of different voices: a soft, low arrrrrr and a slightly louder woof! Since I work in a school, I try my hardest to keep quiet. Sometimes, I simply sit beside our friends or lay at their feet. I do my best to generate thousands of smiles every day! Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that a very important part of my day is receiving treats. I have many colleagues who have treats in their rooms and I know exactly where every treat is kept! If you want to know, stop by and I will be happy to show you! I “pawsitively” love my job with Tiffin City Schools. I have amazing friends and colleagues. I am one very lucky dog to be a part of the TCS family! Wags and Licks! Kennedy
