A Depth In Existence-part 1 Poem by: Sarah Shaddox I claim existence Because I refuse to be nothing Though no one seems to notice I still do not bury myself deep. I hide behind my masks of many My masks of emotion and solitude My masks of beauty and grace. No beauty of mine, Can shine Without its mask. Dark makeup, surrounding my eyes And hidden in dark clothing. Not to make people afraid, Not to be judged, But for myself. A label is put on us all, So I accept that I am becoming one, One of the labels... Its the new... REAL me... My mask of emotion can be hidden. Though, I refuse to be nothing, Sometimes nothing is something that is chosen. To feel no emotion, To wish you were numb. To mask the sadness and hurt with, Anger and fear. You try your hardest, To put on a bright smile, As a mask for the world. But your anger still comes out. Blaming no one except yourself, For the scars on your wrist. Yes! You put them there. And now your grotesque arms, And legs, Are your fault. The fat wont disappear, As the metal hits your vein. The teasing will continue, And the bleeding wont reside. You will continue to bask in the demolition of yourself. As you continue to fall, You pray that you grow wings. But the further down you fall, The more you seem to realize, That the wings wont save you, They will only get caught on branches on your way down. And your anxious waiting, for you to hit the bottom of your fall, Gets worse. And as you start to flail, You get noticed more. And the teasing continues, And the you fall even faster. Though I refuse to be nothing... . Sometimes nothing is something that is chosen.
