A Devotional for such a time as this: - from: Wilberforce, W., & Belmonte, K. (2006). 365 Days with Wilberforce (p. 134). Leominster, UK: Day One Publications. _______________________ ‘Religion dispenses the choicest cordials’ ‘How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!’ Psalm 119:103 SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: Proverbs 16:20–24 What striking lessons have we had of the precarious tenure of all sublunary possessions. Wealth, and power, and prosperity, how peculiarly transitory and uncertain! But religion dispenses the choicest cordials in the seasons of exigence, in poverty, in exile, in sickness, and in death. The essential superiority of that support which is derived from religion is less felt, at least it is less apparent, when the Christian is in full possession of riches, and splendour, and rank, and all the gifts of nature and fortune. But when all these are swept away by the rude hand of time, or the rough blasts of adversity, the true Christian stands, like the glory of the forest. FOR MEDITATION: Wilberforce wrote often of ‘heavenly cordials.’ At times, he wrote of faith in God as the source of celestial comforts, for those who possessed such faith were ‘not as those who are without hope, but as those sustained by the most efficacious of all cordials.’ Perhaps Wilberforce’s most moving description of heavenly cordials concerned the Scriptures themselves—the words of God which imparted ‘consolation in affliction [and] hope in death.’ These are things, he stated, ‘which the blessed word of God offers to all who will embrace it.’ He rejoiced with other Christians who worked with him to distribute Bibles throughout the world. He and they, he said, had been ‘permitted to be the honoured instruments of the Almighty, in diffusing such a cordial as this through a dying world. How could I but rejoice in being allowed to join with you in endeavouring to circulate these imperishable blessings?’ REFERENCE: A Practical View of Christianity (1797) - via Logos 5 #devotionalforsuchatimeasthis #christjesus #vineofchristministries #theword #studyscripture #god #biblestudy #bible #jesus #faith #dailydevotions #devotional
