A Dhobee’s ‘Gadhaa’ and ‘Kutta’ ************************************ In the seventh or eighth class Sanskrit book, I read a very inspiring lesson. A dhobee was having a ‘gadhaa’ (donkey) and a ‘Kutta’(dog), and used to give them both a very brutal treatment in every respect. Once , when in the night, some thieves entered the house, the donkey asked the dog to bark, so the master may wake up. The dog replied, “ You, the fool ! Don’t you see how harshly our master treats us, and so let the thieves loot his house. I do not have any sympathy with him.” Hearing this reply, the donkey got furious, and reprimanded the dog, saying, “ Let our master be as he is, but at least, I will show my loyalty to him in this moment of crisis”, and started braying , HAIN-CHOON, HAIN-CHOON in full volume. Hearing the harsh sound of the donkey braying, the thieves ran away, but dhobee got disturbed in his sleep, and so he brought a lathee, and thrashed the donkey ruthlessly. After the dhobee retired to sleep, and donkey crying with pain, the dog said tauntingly, “ Gadhu raam! dekh liya zayada wafadaree kaa result ” The moral of the story – Those who bear on their shoulders the entire responsibility for safeguarding some values , for which the real beneficiaries never care, generally meet the fate of the above ‘gadhaa’ ************************************************************ Dr. Mustafa Kamal Sherwani Lucknow sherwanimk@yahoo
