A FAN WRITES TO THE COMMISSIONER : August 22, 2013 The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball Allan H. (Bud) Selig, Commissioner 245 Park Avenue, 31st Floor New York, NY 10167 212-931-7800 Fax: 212-949-5654 RE: PETE ROSE BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME Mr. Commissioner: As in no other position in America, perfection is demanded of sports participants and the lack thereof is used in force to eradicate any achievement no matter the level of triumph. Are we so shortsighted and narrow in view to deny proper recognition of extraordinary and unprecedented accomplishments when accompanied by an ordinary human weakness in other areas? One wonders if we as a country would have ever been successful in space endeavors or scientific discoveries if such “stone throwing” methods were used in these fields. A study of history supports the fact that a large number of masterpieces in literature and art would never have made it into the halls of fame based on the criteria imposed by some baseball critics. Far greater authority than is encompassed in any other judgments is found in the Bible: John 8:7 - “So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Some youth, years later will inquire, “Who was the greatest hitter of all time in baseball?” – and the response to this simple question will be Pete Rose, who racked up 4,256 hits and set 19 other major league records. Note , history tends to not continue to carry along a rules/regulations/weaknesses indictment – but the halls of time effectively clears away the fog to properly portray an exceptional and outstanding feat in the proper light and make a focused and resolute judgment. Pete Rose has a record of pure career accomplishments that are without a doubt worthy of a spot in the Hall of Fame, and call is made herein that it is time to lay aside prejudices and biases and “keep our eye on the ball.” - Linda Ponder Carter
