A FORMER Ashby School pupil has been recognised for his gallantry in the First World War, despite being left out of Government plans to highlight all recipients of the Victoria Cross Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Bent attended Ashby Boys Grammar School (now Ashby School) between 1904 and 1907 and is now featured as part of a memorial board unveiled for past pupils of an Edinburgh school who fought in the Great War. Lt Col Bent was born in Canada, in 1891 and, following an education at the Royal High School, in Edinburgh, and Ashby Grammar School, joined HMS Conway in 1907. Pupils from his former Edinburgh school attended a short ceremony dedicating the plaque to the memory of those former pupils. The soldier, who came to England as a young boy, was left out of Government plans to lay paving stones in the home towns of every UK Victoria Cross recipient for the centenary because he was not born in England.
