A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO CHURCH – My dad was serving as a sort of Campaign Manager for a tent deliverance evangelist in the late 50’s or maybe 1960. He had a good market in the Huntington area in the summer time and in the winter, my dad would have him for a revival in his small church. He had a nice young, clean cut man in his late teens playing the organ. It was after chicken time on a Sunday afternoon and David, the organist wanted to ride Tony, our workhorse. Tony will always be remembered by me for his giving me my first ride on a horse ever. As soon as I got on him he began running toward the barn and under the shed. At the end of the shed was our manure pile which Tony decided he didn’t want to climb so he put all fours on lockup. What I would later learn to be inertia, sent my bony rack over his head and into the manure pile. I should have remembered this, but I was just a kid. Tony was tall and had never seen a saddle. He was a workhorse, more accustomed to a harness to pull a plow. So, I would walk Tony to the hillside, just below the chicken house where a rock stuck out of the hillside. I could step off the rock and onto Tony’s back. This was my plan for David. But I had failed to explain the plan to Tony. When David was about half way up, Tony moved forward and David moved downward, hitting his shoulder on the rock, I believe. I remember the curvy ride into Huntington to the hospital and specifically remember David playing the organ that night in a deliverance service with a cast on his arm. That just seemed a bit of a setback in the marketing plan.
