A GEM UNEARTHED --- When news came out that a Dabawenyo, a RANDY HALASAN was chosen one of the Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for the year, almost everyone asked: Randy who? No one outside his immediate circle heard of him or his exemplary work. No wonder not too many knew him since he served as public school head teacher in a remote village in the mountains of Marilog district which, I was told, can be reached from downtown Davao City after a 7 hour-ride by bus, habalhabal. (motorcycle), hiking, crossing 2 rivers, all combined. He worked for the native Matigsalug tribes. Many more untold stories of this man, a gem unearthed, will now be in the news. In the meantime, it may be welcome news for the City and its people to honor him during this months Araw festivities. This is not only for him but for the many other countless souls who remain unknown and unheralded but are quietly and selflessly serving their fellowmen, especially the underprivileged, the deprived, the lowly. Just a thought....
