A GUITAR, THE CHURCH. I play an acoustic guitar; I have done so for the last thirty years. You can learn a lot about the church of Jesus through the guitar. If it is out of tune, it sounds terrible – you press the correct chords, strum with all your might, people see you playing, but no one is drawn to the music – Try playing with a broken string, you get some of the melody, but the harmonics are missing. Try playing a tune on one string only- you could recognise the tune, but it won’t resound in your heart. Maybe five strings are perfectly tuned, and only one is out of tune – to the masses they would probably not know, but the one who has a trained ear, will pick it up immediately. Now take a guitar that is perfectly tuned, whose neck is set correctly. In the hands of an accomplished musician, the music will touch your heart. In the hands of a maestro, he will have the hardest heart melt. The resonance of the melody being echoed from the lovingly crafted wood will cause the eyes of men to stare in wonder and their ears will be attentive. The guitar represents Jesus, and the strings are the body of Christ. One string alone can never ever begin to portray the Master. A broken string affects the whole ensemble. Strings out of tune will strike discord in the heart of the hearer. Together, in tune, the melody goes forth and brings joy to all who hear it. The Glory of God can never be reflected through an individual. Only through the body, of which we are all members, can the Master bring forth melodies which will draw the hearts of men. No string is greater than the other. All have different pitches, different resonance, but together, in tune, none broken – can the Master play music such as the world has never heard. “ But you, as living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus … 1 Pet 2:5 From the pen of Ivan Cilliers.
