A German company called AMSilk seems to have developed a strain of E. coli capable of producing spider silk with the help of some genetic engineering. The bacteria were encouraged to express genes spliced in from the garden cross spider, allowing them to excrete spider silk protein as they also goes about the business of making E. coli proteins. This single-cell organism is able to make 20 different silk grades from four silk varieties. geek/science/spider-silk-is-finally-ready-to-be-commercialized-1587359/
