A Gift From Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Taimiyyah To Those Whose Love & Hate Is Either Based Upon Following One Particular Scholar Or Based Upon Following A Certain Group Of Scholars Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taimiyyah rahimahul-llah said: “The people of truth and Sunnah do not follow except the Messenger peace is upon him who would not speak out of desire. He is the one whom must be believed in everything he told and obeyed in everything he commanded. And such status is not permissible for any of the Imams after him, rather everyone’s statement can either be accepted or rejected except the Messenger peace is upon him. And whomever made a person other than the Messenger (peace is upon him in a way whoever loves him and agrees with him is from Ahlus-Sunnah and whoever disagrees with him is from people of innovation and division-like it is present in sects- he is from people of innovation, misguidance and division”. Ref: Majmoo’ fataawaa 3/346-347 He-rahimahul-llah also said: “It is not permissible for anyone to make a person other than the Messenger (peace is upon him) nor a speech other than the book of Allah the principle in the religion. And whoever appoints a person-regardless of whom he was- then gives loyalty and disavowal based on agreeing with him in action and speech he is from {those who have divided their religion and become sects} Al-An’aam 159. And if a person sought understanding of the religion according to a way of a group of believers- like the followers of Imams- is not permissible for him to set his friends (i.e. a select group of Muslim laypeople or scholars) as the role model and the criteria, so that he allies with whomever agrees with them and he antagonizes whomever disagrees with them. So it is incumbent on the person to seek the inward understanding in his heart and to act upon it for that what is hidden in heart becomes apparent at times of trials. And it is impermissible for anyone to belief in a statement or call to it just because it is said by his companions (i.e. a , nor it is permissible for him to fight for it. Rather he should do that because it is from what Allah and His Messenger have commanded or what Allah and his Messenger told because that is an obedience to Allah and His Messenger”.
