A Heavy Heart leads to Heart Failure -Taken from The Nutrition Action Health Letter: November 2002 An overweight woman has a higher risk of heart failure, even if shes not obese, say researchers from the Framingham Heart Study in Massachusetts. Overweight women were about 50% more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure than normal-weight women. Obese women had twice the risk. (A woman who is 54 tall is overweight if she weighs at least 145 pounds and obese if she weighs at least 174 pounds.) Heart failure means that the heart gradually loses its ability to pump enough blood through the body. Shortness of breath is the most common symptom. Heart failure occurs in 1% of people aged 50 and about 5% of people aged 75. What to do: Lose extra pounds with a healthy diet and exercise.
