A LETTER TO COMRADE YINKA GBADEBO, NATIONAL PRESIDENT NANS. Dear Comrade Yinka, Today marks the deadline of the 7th-day-ultimatum by National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urging ASUU/FG to call off their bluff and send the students back to school. This ultimatum, you will recall, was with a clause, that failure to heed this call will lead to an unprecedented mass protest that shall cripple the political and socio- economic activities in the country. In retrospect, NANS was an autonomous body, devoid of sectional leanings or political wranglings, and this posture, made it formidable, little wonder the likes if Wale Olanipekun, former President of NBA and a human rights lawyer were respected by the government. In his days in NANS,students were feared and reverred by the government, just because of administrative faux pas, a Vice Chancellor was sacked via students protest in the popular " Ali Must Go" Saga in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)Zaria. In those days when NANS sneezes,FG catches cold,it was as strong as that, today,NANS has been reduced to playthings. As a concerned citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I was overwhelmed with gusto the day I read about the Ultimatum, but just like cubes of sugar when mixed with hot tea,it melted with the hot tea,and today being the last day,I was waiting for a lifeline from President Yinka, but none came, hence this letter. As a person, I asked myself, What could possibly have weakened NANS resolve towards its earlier admirable sentiments? I asked and asked until it became obvious that an answer seemed not in the offing. President Yinka,do you remember that day,at the community centre,University of Uyo?you came for campaign, I drove you all through the cities of uyo, together with comrade Uduak Nsebasi, well, you succeeded in wooing our votes, exhausting my fuel in the period of subsidy removal, all for free. Today,I want a reparation for the services I rendered and this are the terms : 1)As a leader,do not back down on the mass protest no matter the thickness of the envelope. 2)Students need you to lead the protest and I urge you to accept. Finally, just like Odia Ofeimum,"We Must Learn Again to Fly". Paapa Akpan University of Uyo,Uyo.
