A LETTER TO THE TEN FINGER ARMY CAKERS It was very apparent as I read your comments last night , that a LOT of us are working solo as we make our cakes. A lot of us are also juggling this with other important things, home life, work and school for example. Ive read on Facebook , quite a lot of times, that many tend to break their work down , as the cakes seem blah compared to all the other cakes on their newsfeed... compared to all the other cakes other artists out there are doing . Let me ask you - my fellow, ten finger army caker -- to think about that for a second and to think deeper about the reason behind it . We tend to look everywhere- and as human instinct allows, a lot of us compare our work to everybody elses. Do you know the danger that puts us through ? Many times, instead of a job well done, we will say, the opposite... because a seven tier wonder just flashed on our screen. Well, you dont know the circumstances behind that - maybe ten people made it, maybe one person did... maybe it took ten days, maybe it took three... my question is, SHOULD IT MATTER? Everywhere I also see the sad auto-pilot excuse that people tell themselves to make em feel better.... thinking automatically, that the other cakes are better probably because they had staff make it, or maybe because only the good ones are shown in FB, or maybe because they went to school for it --- of whatever silly reason ! IT SHOULDNT MATTER how they do their stuff. What we should focus our energies on is how WE DO what we do. Do a healthy reality check --- are you learning new things, are you becoming more efficient as you practice more, are you learning to price your cakes better.... are you moving forward ? Or do your last ten cakes look like little versions of each other and you have not tried new things? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY- cakes are just a part of your life. For the most of us, we juggle this with real life -- families, school, jobs ... so instead of looking outside and trying to gauge how the other caker manages to make 10 cakes a weekend and you cant .... try to look INWARD--- and see how you have spent your 24 hours. Did you take your kids to school, kids, to swimming, go to your day job, pick up your parents, go to the library , grocery shopping ... etc etc etc... AND then made cakes?... IF that is how your day looked like, and you still managed to bake one cake - I SALUTE YOU . At this point, you know what I am gonna say. It is no use looking outside and comparing your work and then breaking yourself down . Look out - sure - but do it to inspire you ! Look WITHIN - MORE and get to be your own best friend -- and learn to accept what you can and cannot do , and see yourself smile more , and appreciate what you have done with your 24 hours. Ive said it here before- that you always have a choice. You can either build yourself up, or break yourself down. Choose wisely. -Mayen
