A Lead man missing since he took off from Spearfish Airport on Friday is discovered dead in the wreckage of his Cessna 170 near Hardin, Montana on Sunday. 50-year old Peter Kovarik was a Catholic priest and a longtime clergy member with the Rapid City Diocese. Search and rescue crews found the wreckage of Kovariks plane Sunday in a field near Hardin, 270-miles northwest of Rapid City. It is not known exactly when that plane went down. Kovarik departed Spearfish Airport on Friday without filing a flight plan. He had indicated to friends prior to takeoff that he intended just a short pleasure flight. Sometime during the flight Kovarik made radio contact to get additional weather information regarding conditions in the Belle Fourche area. Its believed that was the last time anyone spoke to Kovarik. Parishioners in the Lead-Deadwood area reported Kovarik missing Saturday after he failed to show up to conduct Saturday mass. An aerial and ground search finally located the crash site near Hardin, Montana, early Sunday. Fr. Peter Kovarik was ordained a Catholic priest in 1991 and pastored throughout the Rapid City diocese during his tenure, serving six years at Our Lady of the Black Hills in Piedmont and most recently in the Lead and Deadwood Parishes. He was 50 years of age. An investigation into the cause of that plane crash is ongoing.--Only on NewsCenter1
