A Letter From Diana Andreas, Morgan County R-2 Special Education Department: I would like to tell you about some success stories. I am a special services teacher at Morgan County R2 and have spent the last twenty-seven years educating students with learning disabilities, mental handicaps, emotional disturbances, and many other health issues. All my students have had to overcome some tough obstacles in their life, like struggling with reading or math. I’ll never forget the day when one of my 7th grade boys ran into my room, grabbed two markers, stuffed them up his nose, and then wedged himself between an iron support beam and the wall while laughing hysterically. He did this in less than 15 seconds! Was he some crazy nut? No, but he did have ADHD and probably hadn’t taken his meds that day. I got him calmed down and back in his chair. Then he finished up his homework for the day. I have seen these kids graduate and become physical therapist assistants, city workers, Wal-Mart associates, grocery store clerks, prison guards, and successful employees at Quality Industries. Did state mandated tests help these students on the road to success? No. All these tests did was to point out to them all their faults and disabilities and make them feel bad about themselves. On Nov 4th voters will be going to the polls to cast a ballot. One of the items on the ballot is Amendment 3. It calls for more state mandated testing. We currently have state tests for most grades in elementary and middle school. In the high school we give the ASVAB, ACT, end-of-course exams yearly. Semester finals are given in all classes at the end of each semester. How much more testing do we need? How much is this going to cost the taxpayers? Do we want to give up our local control and hand it over to Jeff City politicians? Please protect our local schools and vote NO on Amendment 3. Diana Andreas MCR2 Special Education Dept.
