A Letter sent from UIUC Library Greetings all, It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that Daniel John Stimeling, former University Library employee, died Sunday, August 24, 2014, in Texas where he was living. Dan first worked for the University Library as a student assistant while he was completing his Bachelor’s degree from June, 2003, until July, 2007. Dan worked for Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery unit for most of those years. He also worked for the Map and Geography Library as a student worker for part of his undergraduate years. After graduating with his BA in English, Dan took a position as a Bookstore Clerk in the Illini Union Bookstore in January, 2007. An avid bibliophile, Dan was happy at the Bookstore, until a permanent position opened up in ILL/DD. Dan came back to the Library in July, 2007 as a Library Assistant. He promoted to Library Specialist in December, 2008, and remained in that classification until his resignation in September, 2011. Dan left the Library to pursue his dream of living and teaching abroad, and lived in South Korea for a time teaching English. Dan returned to the States, and was working for Texas A & M when he died. Dan was one of those special people who made it easy to get to know him. Always interested in others, he was a good listener and easily made many friends. Dan loved to travel and was committed to life-long learning. As an employee, Dan was outstanding, learning quickly, and demonstrating good judgment. He worked in a high traffic area, and was able to keep up with deadlines easily. Dan’s rapport with his co-workers, and especially his student workers, was exemplary. He took his job seriously, and always made ILL/DD and the University Library look great. Dan was 32. He is survived by his parents, John and Joni of Peoria, and three siblings, Thomas, Megan, and Andrew, all living in Peoria. An obituary is available at herald-zeitung/obituaries/article_7f9bfe9a-2cca-11e4-a372-0019bb2963f4.html I can remember when Dan was first hired a student and passed through our office. Dan had a quirky sense of humor and could always make me laugh. When he graduated, since he was a student library worker, Dan was eligible to have his photo and bio on the Library Wall of Honor. When we take the photos of the students, we always ask if they would like to do something different for their picture. Dan immediately grinned, and stretched out full length on one of the Library benches. That picture is attached. Dan told me smiling, “I always wanted to sleep on one of these, but never had the nerve.” He enjoyed when the picture went up on the wall. Dan, you will be sorely missed. Godspeed, Dan.
