There is already a committee set up by the Senate to investigate the crisis.” Barely an hour after Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi inaugurated a nine-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry on the July 9 and 10 crisis in the House of Assembly, Monday night inside the Executive Chamber of Government House, Port Harcourt, the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the move, accusing the Governor of playing the role of a judge in a matter involving him. Amaechi chose a serving Judge of the Rivers State Judiciary, Justice Biobele Georgewill, as the chairman of the commission, charging the commission to investigate the cause of the brawl, the number of persons injured, as well as the number of properties damaged or destroyed. He also instructed them to find out if external forces were involved in the crisis. The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru during the inauguration, charged the commission’s members to submit their recommendation on or before October 15, 2013. In his response, the commission’s chairman, Justice Biobele Georgewill assured the Governor of the members’ readiness to work with integrity for peace to prevail in the state. Other members of the commission are Baribura Gbaragbo, Goddy Agbaraosimini, Iboroma Akpana, Ejike Iwediba, Desmond Wosu (ithe Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State University Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt), Mr. Barinua Christian Keenam (secretary). But in a swift reaction to the development, the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Felix Obuah said it was wrong for the Governor to inaugurate the commission, since he is the main suspect in the brawl. He also said that it amounts to Amaechi becoming a judge in a case he is involved in. He said: “Amaechi cannot be a judge in his own case. Amaechi is a principal suspect in the matter. It shows that he is desperate for power.
